A well-informed and effective School Council can strengthen and positively impact a school in many ways. We highly value the input from our School Council members and appreciate the parent voice and perspective that is shared at each of our meetings. Our school council is proactive, supportive, and works very closely with the school and its leadership team to continually strive for improvement and growth in multiple areas.

If you would like to be involved in Newtown Primary School’s School Council, nominations are generally open in February each year. School Council members usually hold their positions for terms of two years.

There are approximately 8 School Council meetings each year plus a Public Reporting Meeting, at which all members of the school community are invited to attend.

For families who need flexibility around the school day, our Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) program is run on-site by Kelly Club — a provider with a track record spanning over 100 programs across Australia and New Zealand. Kelly Club’s aim isn’t to run “just a childcare facility,” but to create a genuinely safe, fun environment where children feel a sense of belonging while they play, connect and unwind.

Kelly Club provides care around the edges of the school day and beyond as stated below:

• Before School Care — A calm, settled start to the day, with activities like art and craft, games, Lego and free play to ease children into learning mode.
• After School Care — A busy, engaging afternoon built around sport, cooking, and creative activities, balanced with structured free time and, for families who want it, a set homework window.
• Holiday Programs — Full-day programs during school holidays, featuring club-based days, incursions and excursions that change every break, so no two holidays look the same.
• Pupil Free Day Care – when our school holds a pupil-free, or curriculum day, Kelly Club runs their service for our families to ensure that the impact is lessened and that our students, your children, still have access to a quality, caring, and safe service.

Every Kelly Club educator is qualified in childcare and holds a valid Working With Children Check. Staffing levels are set to meet legal staff-to-child ratios based on session bookings, and child safety and a sense of belonging sit at the centre of the program’s day-to-day practice. Sam, our current Kelly Club educator and coordinator, is exceptionally well equipped to support and lead our Kelly Club service and does so each and every day with care and passion. We are lucky to have Sam on board supporting and looking after our students.

I strongly encourage any family considering OSHC to register in advance — even if you don’t think you’ll need it regularly. It costs nothing to join, and having it in place gives you a safety net for the days work runs late, plans change, or the school holidays sneak up faster than expected.

At Newtown PS we have a dedicated ‘Canteen’ space that we ustilise for a range learning, wellbeing, and community focused opportunities.

We have an outsourced Canteen Lunch Service which operates once per week. The friendly Fresh Meal Fairy team have created a predominantly healthy lunch order menu and make a large portion of the available choices themselves in an approved kitchen offsite. Lunches are then delivered to school and distributed to students from the canteen space by Fresh Meal Fairy staff.

Lunch order day certainly is a favourite for our students.

The service currently operates every WEDNESDAY for student lunches.

At Newtown Primary School, our uniform is more than just what our students wear — it’s a symbol of pride, unity, and belonging. Every child steps into our school community wearing something that says, “I’m part of something great.” All students are required to wear the official school uniform, available through our nominated, official supplier.

We’ve curated a range of uniform options designed to suit every child, and we encourage families to explore these choices together. We’re also committed to keeping our uniform accessible and affordable for every family, in line with Department of Education requirements. If cost is ever a barrier, reach out to us — we’re here to help, quietly and without judgement.

We also offer Second Hand Uniform items from the school.

At Newtown PS we understand that starting or transitioning from another school can be costly, not to mention that uniform items get lost and misplaced, and or get to a point of no return from countless wears. As a result, we offer second hand uniforms from the school office. Items are donated by current or departing school families, are washed, sanitised, and are available to our school community for a gold coin donation per item.
